County Honors Employee of the Quarter: On Thursday, Michael (Jeff) McCann of the Boone County Public Works Design & Construction Department was recognized as the Boone County Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2010. Joseph Ciesielczyk and Roger Schwartz from Facilities Maintenance, Ginger Scalise from the Public Administrator's Office, Jacquline Gaines from Mail Services and Connie Chamberlain from Informational Technology (IT) were also nominated for the honor.
Board Appointment: On Thursday, the Boone County Commission appointed Celeste Kay Spickert to the Building Code Board of Appeals.
Barrels Available through City of Columbia Public Works: The City of Columbia Stormwater Utility is giving away free Blue 55 gallon barrels for residents of Boone County and the City of Columbia to construct their own rain barrel at home. Public Hearing: The Boone County Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed tax rate for 2010 Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Roger B. Wilson Government Center, Commission Chambers, 801 E. Walnut, Columbia, Mo. 65201.
Stormwater PSA Contest: The Hinkson Creek Watershed Restoration Project is sponsoring a Stormwater Public Service Announcement (PSA) Video Contest that challenges filmmakers residing or attending school within Boone County to produce short, creative videos that highlight stormwater or water pollution issues.
The Hinkson Project is accepting submissions for the contest through Oct.12, 2010.
All films should be 30 seconds or less, and multiple entries are allowed. There are two categories being offered; under 18 and 18 and over. Awards will be given to the top two videos in each category: First place in each category will receive $500 while second place in each category will receive $250. Winning submissions will be announced in October.
The PSAs will be aired on local television stations, in local movie theaters and during educational events. For more information about the contest or stormwater, visit www.helpthehinkson.org.
Hinkson Creek Cleanup: The 7th annual Hinkson Clean Sweep will be held Oct. 16, 2010 from 10 a.m. to noon. Hinkson Clean Sweep is a city-wide stream cleanup event where volunteers work together to clean area streams. The result is a healthier watershed and attractive community. Volunteers will be provided mesh and trash bags. Sites will be led with trained volunteers and supporting staff. Select the location appropriate for you, your family, organization or group. Everyone can participate! Handicapped accessible locations are available. This event is appropriate for individuals, and groups of all sizes and people of all ages and abilities.
