Boone County "Week in Review"

Week ending October 31, 2009

Columbia, Mo. (October 30, 2009)

Bridge Deck Repairs Completed: On Tuesday, Boone County Public Works Interim Director Derin Campbell reported that bridge deck repairs on Nashville Church Road in southern Boone County and Old No. 7 east of Harrisburg have been completed. The bridge decks were repaired using hydrodemolition and a latex-modified concrete, both new technologies for Boone County bridges.

County, City Meet to Discuss GIS: On Wednesday and Thursday, representatives from Boone County, the City of Columbia and Boone Electric Cooperative participated in the Geographic Information System (GIS) Visioning Workshop organized by Boone County GIS Manager Jason Warzinik. The workshop focused on the past, present and future of GIS technology in the County and the City. Keynote speaker Stephen Marsh, GIS manager for Jackson County, Mo. and President of the Missouri GIS Advisory Council, told participants about the evolution of GIS in his county and gave suggestions on how Boone County and Columbia can work together to have a successful GIS program. Group brainstorming sessions were facilitated by Stephen Kinzy, regional manager for GIS software company ESRI of St. Louis, and Kim Burns, an account manager for ESRI. Boone County been a partner in the Shared GIS Consortium with the City of Columbia and Boone Electric Cooperative since 1997.

2010 Budget Update: On Friday, Boone County Auditor June Pitchford gave the Boone County Commission an update on the county's 2010 budget. During the work session, Pitchford proposed a revised reserve (fund balance) policy that would set a minimum and maximum percentage of undesignated fund balance for the county's three major funds (general, road and bridge and law enforcement services). A new policy is being proposed because the current guidelines do not give the Commission enough financial flexibility to deal with varying economic situations. Pitchford also reviewed projected revenues and expenditures for 2009/2010 and supplemental budget requests from departments and elected officials.

County Employee Participates in 60-mile Cancer Walk: On Friday, Boone County Commission secretary Jessica Sapp embarked on the Tampa Bay Breast Cancer 3-Day walk which will cover more than 60 miles.
