Stream Table Demonstration to Take Place in Boone County Government Center

June 5, 2012

On Monday, June 11, 2012, the lobby of the Boone County Government Center will seem a little more natural. At scheduled times throughout the day, Boone County Stormwater staff will offer education on how streams function through the use of a stream table demonstration.

Communities are connected by rivers and streams, and Columbia is no different. Healthy, clean water is important not only to those who use the trails, rivers and streams for recreation, but to the community as a whole. However, as communities develop, changes to the land alter the hydrology and impact the water quality of our streams. This often leads to reduced habitat for fish and aquatic invertebrates (bugs). Locally, Hinkson Creek has been undergoing these changes for several decades. Today, more than 90,000 people live in the Hinkson Creek Watershed, and each plays an important role in the protection and restoration of this important natural resource.

Demonstrations will provide education about how streams function, with topics including flooding, bank stabilization, buffers and more. Feel free to stop by anytime between 9:00AM-10:30AM, 11:30AM-1:00PM and 1:30-2:30PM to see the stream table in action. City of Columbia and Boone County employees are especially encouraged to attend. For more information, please contact Georganne Bowman at (573) 886-4430.
