County Moves Forward with Improved Tree Trimming Policy: On Monday, the Boone County Public Works Department gave the Boone County Commission an update on their changes to the residential tree and vegetation maintenance policy. The department has ordered door hangers which will be used to give residents 24 to 48 hours notice of tree trimming activity in their subdivision. Homeowners will also receive a diagram that illustrates how a tree should be trimmed and have the option of trimming their own trees before the County performs maintenance. In February, Road and Bridge Maintenance Manager Chip Estabrooks presented a first draft of the policy which outlines the Public Works Department's maintenance guidelines in the County's right-of-way. County maintenance staff has also participated in a prunning workshop with Chad Herwald from the City of Columbia Parks Department.
County Bid Opening: On Thursday, the Boone County Commission opened three bids for the Brown School Road asphalt overlay 2010 pavement preservation. The bids will be reviewed by the Boone County Purchasing Department and Public Works staff and awarded at an upcoming Commission meeting.
IECA Conference: On Wednesday, Boone County Public Works co-sponsored the 2010 Great Rivers International Erosion Control Association (IECA) Spring Workshop at the Bradford Technology Transfer Center in Columbia. The workshop focused on design/modeling for post construction and featured a keynote speech by John Chapman of the University of Minnesota Erosion and Stormwater Management Program. The City of Columbia and University of Missouri also sponsored the event.
Revenue Sharing Finalized: On Thursday, the Boone County Commission approved the final amounts for 2010 revenue sharing funds. Revenue sharing, originally funded by Proposition II in October 1998 was developed to provide resources to cities within Boone County and the Centralia Special Road District (CSRD) to fund mutually beneficial City/County shared road and bridge public improvement projects. 2010 funding allotments are as follows:
Press Conference on Economic Development Initiative: On Monday, March 29, Boone County Presiding Commissioner Ken Pearson will be joined by City of Columbia fourth ward councilman Jerry Wade, the Columbia/Boone County Citizens' Task Force for Post Secondary Education, members of Regional Economic Development Inc. (REDI) and other public/private-sector officials and representatives to announce an economic development initiative to aid the workforce and employers of Columbia and the Boone County area. The event will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Columbia Area Career Center, room 148, 4203 South Providence Road, Columbia, Mo. 65203.
