Helping Joplin after the tornado

KRCG and Red Cross team up for Joplin tornado telethon

KRCG and the Capital Area Chapter of the Red Cross are teaming up Tuesday to hold a telethon for tornado victims in Joplin.

The proceeds raised will be given directly to tornado victims in the Joplin area.

Joplin needs shoes

The Columbia Board of Realtors and KFRU-AM are collecting shoes for the victims of the tornado in Joplin. “Kim Cox, the Joplin AE, has specifically asked for shoes,” said C.J. Strawn, Realtor and real estate consultant in Columbia.

Local Realtor Shannon O'Brien and Brent Gardner of KFRU-AM will be in the Schnuck's parking lot at 1400 Forum Blvd., Columbia, Tuesday, May 24, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, May 25, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon to collect donated shoes. A second collection point will be at 2309 I-70 Drive NW, Columbia.

Shoes may be used, but should be clean and in good condition. Shoes for men, women and children are needed.

MU Center for Family Policy collecting supplies for infants, toddlers and preschoolers

The MU Center for Family Policy is collecting donation of supplies that will help the infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in Joplin who have been affected by the tornado. They made a similar delivery to Mississippi after Katrina.

  • Tuesday, May 24, 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, May 26, 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday, May 27, 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.

United For Joplin Fundraiser

A fundraiser for the victims of the Joplin tornado will be held on Thursday, May 27, from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Museao, 3500 Buttonwood Drive, Columbia. The event is sponsored by the Heart of Missouri United Way, companies of Museao and KOMU-TV. Individuals are asked to provide their tax-deductible donations through the United Way. Local businesses are also being asked to begin fundraising within their own companies. All funds collected will go directly to the community of Joplin for recovery efforts.

Live entertainment and appetizers will be provided. A live telethon produced by KOMU-TV will be hosted by Sarah Hill and broadcast worldwide. During the telethon, community leaders will be answering donation calls.

Food collection drive at D Rowe's

D Rowe's Restaurant will be doing a food collection drive by the restaurant on Saturday, May 28. All items will be staged at the Food Bank for deployment to Joplin when SEMA allows.

Collection site for blankets, pillows, small amounts of clothing, toilet paper, tooth brushes, diapers, bottled water and factory sealed food items. Fry-Wagner Moving Co. has agreed to transport the items to the Salvation Army in Joplin.

Mental Health reports they are trying to locate individuals to whom they currently provide service. They are asking these people to contact the 1-800 Mental Health Crisis Hotline at 800-494-7355.
