Columbia Bicentennial Mural Painting Session to be held Saturday, September 21, 2019
September 16, 2019—Attendees at the Annual Heritage Festival & Craft Show are invited to help paint the Columbia portion of the Boone County Bicentennial mural on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Mural painting will take place between 12:00pm and 3:00pm on the front porch of the Boone County History & Culture Center, located at 3801 Ponderosa Street, Columbia.
Boone County will celebrate its Bicentennial in 2020 and work is already underway to create a memorable experience for all citizens of Boone County. Local artist/educator Stacy Self (WildysWorld) is creating a large mural in the shape of Boone County that depicts 200 years of Boone County history. The mural is divided into pieces, each representing distinct geographic sections of the County. Meetings were held throughout the county to learn what is important and unique about each community, directly from the members of that community.
Based on this input, Self is designing the artwork so that members of each community can paint their own portion of the mural. After all pieces are complete, they will be joined to form the “map” of Boone County, which will be on display during 2020 in the Boone County History & Culture Center. At the close of the Bicentennial Year, the pieces will be given to the communities that created them, where they will be displayed for posterity.
