Active Assailant Exercise to Take Place Monday, November 21, 2016
November 16, 2016
On Monday November 21 local response agencies will take part in a two-part active assailant exercise in Columbia and Ashland. The first portion of this exercise will focus on an incident on the University of Missouri campus at Laws Hall from 2:00-4:00 PM, with a prolonged exercise for the Columbia Police Department taking place into the evening hours. The second phase of this exercise will take place at Southern Boone Elementary School from 6:00-8:00 PM. Both exercises will focus on an active assailant incident and will include a full response from law enforcement, emergency medical services and local fire departments or districts.
During these exercise events citizens will notice a high volume of law enforcement officers, ambulance staff and fire department personnel in and around Laws Hall and Southern Boone Elementary School. Although both exercises are intended to simulate an actual event, and will appear to be active in nature, neither event is real and both are part of a well-planned effort to combine response agencies from across our community. Each exercise will include volunteers acting as victims, some volunteers will include make up that simulates actual wounds. Exercise staff will escort volunteers if they are removed from the exercise site. Citizens are reminded not to call 9-1-1 unless they are reporting an actual emergency incident.
Agencies involved with this exercise include: University of Missouri Police Department, Columbia Police and Fire Department, Boone County Sheriff's Department, Boone County Fire Protection District, Southern Boone County Fire Protection District, University and Boone Hospital EMS, Missouri State Highway Patrol, City of Columbia Community Relations and the Boone County Office of Emergency Management as well as many community volunteers.
