Severe Weather Preparedness Week: March 6 - 10, 2023
March 3, 2023 – It is important to learn the hazards of severe weather and what you can do to stay safe. The National Weather Service and the State Emergency Management Agency have declared the week of March 6 – 10, 2023, as Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Boone County Office of Emergency Management is participating through the Boone County Ready community preparedness campaign to ensure citizens are prepared for severe weather.
During Severe Weather Preparedness Week, each day is assigned a different topic. Boone County Office of Emergency Management will share safety information on the Boone County Ready social media accounts throughout the week to educate citizens on how to best protect themselves.
Below is the schedule of topics:
Monday, March 6, 2023 – Receiving Weather Information and Having a Plan
Receiving weather information and having a plan are two of Boone County Ready’s four steps of preparedness. Citizens can Be Informed by creating a Smart911 profile and opting in to receive weather alerts. They are encouraged to Make a Plan for what to do and where to go during severe weather.
Tuesday, March 7, 2023 – Tornado Safety
The Annual Statewide Tornado Drill will be held at 10:00 AM, weather permitting. During this drill, NOAA Weather Radios will be activated and Boone County will participate by activating our Outdoor Warning Siren (OWS) system. Schools, businesses, and households are encouraged to participate in the drill by discussing tornado safety and sheltering in their safe place. The best place to be during a tornado is the most interior room on the lowest level of any structure.
Wednesday, March 8, 2023 – Lightning Safety
There is no safe place outside when thunderstorms are in the area. If you hear thunder, you are likely within striking distance of the storm. Remember, when thunder roars – go indoors.
Thursday, March 9, 2023 – Hail/Wind Safety
Hail and wind are both hazards of severe thunderstorms. In the event of hail or strong winds, go inside and move away from windows.
Friday, March 10, 2023 – Flood Safety
One of the primary flood hazards and causes of flood-related deaths is driving into and through low water crossings. If you are driving and encounter a flooded road, turn around – don’t drown.
