Boone County Sheriff's Department 'Explorers' Earn Third Place in Capitol Challenge

August 4, 2009

Youth program participants compete in law enforcement competition

On the weekend of July 31, 2009, the Boone County Sheriff's Department Explorers, a program geared toward young adults interested in law enforcement, traveled to Topeka, Kan. for the Capital Challenge Competition. Our Explorers competed against 15 other teams. Some of these teams traveled from as far away as Dallas, Texas, Omaha, Neb., Colorado Springs, Colo. and Tulsa, Okla. The teams competed in 12 different categories ranging from burglary in progress to physical agility tests.

After a weekend of challenging competition we were proud to walk away with third place overall. The Explorers of Boone County took first place in Arrest and Search, first in the Overall Team Agility Course, second in Crime Prevention and second in the Baton Team Relay.

The Explorer program is part of the Boy Scouts of America and is strictly funded by donations. It gives young adults the chance to learn more about a future career in law enforcement. You must be between 14 and 20 years old or have completed eighth grade to be part of the program. If you are interested in joining or would like to make a donation, please contact the Boone County Sheriff's Department or go to http://www.showmeboone.com/sheriff/explorer.asp.
