New Boone County Residents

Moved From Another State

If you have recently moved to Boone County from another state, you will need to visit the Boone County Assessor's office in room 143 of the Roger B. Wilson Boone County Government Center, or by phone at 573-886-4270. Please bring proof of ownership such as the title, registration form, renewal slip, or application for title. Once a personal property tax account has been established, you can obtain a certificate of non-assessment from the collector's office.

Moved From Another County

If you have a current paid property tax receipt from your previous county, you will take that receipt along with the other required information to the DMV branch office. However, it is important that you contact the Boone County assessor's office and let them know you are now a residence of Boone County and need to be placed on the tax rolls.

Several counties in Missouri, including Boone County, provide the DOR with paid personal property tax information. The local branch offices should be able to electronically access these personal property records if you do not have a copy of your tax receipt.

If your previous county does not provide paid personal property tax information to the DOR, the Boone County Collector's office can contact your previous county and verify that there are no outstanding personal property taxes in your name. Once proof of taxes have been paid or accounted for, the Boone County collector's office can issue you a certificate of non-assessment which will allow you to license your vehicle.

First Time Vehicle Owners

You will need to visit the Boone County Assessor's office in room 143 of the Roger B. Wilson Boone County Government Center, or by phone at 573-886-4270. Please bring proof of ownership such as the title, registration form, renewal slip, or application for title. Once a personal property tax account has been established, you can obtain a certificate of non-assessment from the Collector's office.

Vehicles Listed on Property Tax Receipts

The vehicles listed on your personal property tax receipt should be those that you owned on January 1 of the tax year. If the purchase date of the vehicle in question was later than January 1 of the tax year, then your tax receipt will be sufficient as is. The license bureau will verify that the vehicle was not taxable for that year based on the purchase date.

If your vehicle was owned on January 1, and it is not listed on the paid personal property tax receipt, contact the Boone County Assessor's office in room 143 of the Roger B. Wilson Boone County Government Center, or by phone at 573-886-4270, so that your personal property account may be updated accordingly.

Vehicle Sales Tax

The DOR provides a sales tax calculator to estimate the tax you may have to pay when you purchase a vehicle. Sales tax is based on the the sale price of the vehicle, net any trade-in or rebates that may apply. The sales tax rate that applies depends on where you reside, not where the vehicle is purchased.

Sales tax/use rate charts are also available from the DOR's Web site.
