Rescheduled River Communities Bicentennial Mural Painting Session to be held Sunday, January 26, 2020
January 21, 2020— The public is invited to help paint the River Communities portion of the Boone County Bicentennial mural on Sunday, January 26, 2020. Mural painting will take place between 1:00pm and 4:00pm at Cooper’s Landing, 11505 Smith Hatchery Road in Columbia. The event will be held inside where participants can also enjoy live music. Missouri River Relief and Missouri River Cultural Conservancy will also be featured at the event. This event was originally scheduled for January 8, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Boone County will celebrate its Bicentennial in 2020 and work is already underway to create a memorable experience for all citizens of Boone County. Local artist/educator Stacy Self (WildysWorld) is creating a large mural in the shape of Boone County that depicts 200 years of Boone County history. The mural, titled ‘Treasures of Boone County’ is divided into pieces, each representing distinct geographic sections of the County. Meetings were held throughout the county to learn what is important and unique about each community, directly from the members of that community.
Based on this input, Self is designing the artwork so that members of each community can paint their own portion of the mural. After all pieces are complete, they will be joined to form the “map” of Boone County, which will be on display during 2020 in the Boone County History & Culture Center. At the close of the Bicentennial Year, the pieces will be given to the communities that created them, where they will be displayed for posterity.
