Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Recognizes Successful Completion of Route Z/St. Charles Road Roundabout

August 13, 2013

One week before the start of classes, the Route Z/St. Charles roundabout, built to make travel to Battle High School safer and more efficient, is complete. On time and under-budget, the second of three major milestones in the Route Z Improvement Project is another successful collaboration between Boone County and MoDOT.

When Commissioner Dan Atwill called a meeting in February 2012 for community leaders to discuss solutions to the impending traffic nightmare around Battle High School, hopes were not high. “If you give me a plan, I will push it, but I need your help,” Atwill said. Appearing before the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission soon after, Atwill requested funding assistance to create a route to the school that was safer for teenage drivers while not impeding the travels of area residents. Over the next few months, plans were made for major renovations to Route Z, including upgrading the Route Z bridge decking and approaches over I-70, adding shoulders to Route Z between I-70 and St. Charles Road and creating a roundabout at Route Z and St. Charles Road. While many doubted that the construction would be complete in time for the new school to open for its first fall semester, Boone County and MoDOT pushed on.

Less than six months after construction began, a ribbon cutting ceremony at the roundabout at 10:00AM today celebrated the successful completion, right in time for school to start.
