Consultation Coordination Officer Meeting: Preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Maps to be Discussed

September 10, 2015

Boone County and city officials, representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) will meet on Thursday, September 24, 2015 to discuss preliminary results of a local Federal Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM).

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administers the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Once a flood prone community enters the insurance program, individual property owners are able to take advantage of a federally subsidized insurance rate in order to protect themselves from loss by flooding.

The purchase of flood insurance is required as a condition of obtaining any direct or indirect Federal financial assistance for the construction or acquisition of buildings in the identified special flood hazard areas of communities where flood insurance is available.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 9:00 A.M. in the County Commission Chambers, Roger B. Wilson County Government Center, 801 E. Walnut St., Columbia, Missouri. Representatives of civic organizations, lending institutions and insurance companies, and owners of real property are encouraged to attend.

Details of floodplain management and the official appeals process will be discussed. People attending the meeting will have the opportunity to discuss changes in the preliminary flood insurance study and flood insurance rate maps.
