Boone County Commissioners Co-Sponsor Early Childhood Summit

May 20, 2009

Summit stresses importance of early childhood education

What: On May 27, the Boone County commissioners will help promote the importance of early childhood education to the Boone County community. The Boone County commissioners will work in conjunction with the Columbia City Council, the Boone County Coordinating Board for Early Childhood Education and First Chance for Children to present the second annual Early Childhood Summit.

The summit will feature introductions by Boone County Presiding Commissioner Ken Pearson, a member of the Boone County Coordinating Board for Early Childhood Education, and Mayor Darwin Hindman. Senator Kit Bond will give a keynote address entitled "Preparing America's Children for the Future." H. Tyler Nottberg, CEO of U.S. Engineering in Kansas City, will give a keynote speech entitled "Bringing Business Leaders into the Early Childhood Coalition: The Kansas Experience."

The event is free and open to the public.

Why: Starting early is crucial. Between birth and kindergarten, babies build the mental framework that makes future learning possible. Parents, parent educators, and caregivers provide the learning experiences, stimulating activities, and nurturing environments that enable a child to thrive intellectually, socially, and physically. Research has shown that remedial efforts later in life are much less effective and much more costly.

Who: The County Commission is an elected three-member governing body with District I (Southern) Commissioner Karen M. Miller, District II (Northern) Commissioner Skip Elkin and Presiding Commissioner Pearson.

Where: University of Missouri, Memorial Union (Stotler Lounge), Hitt Street, Columbia, Mo.

When: May 27 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Schedule
7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.: Coffee
8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.: Introduction by Hindman and keynote by Bond
8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.: Introduction by Pearson and keynote by Nottberg.
