Boone County Public Works Employee Brandon Irwin to Receive Red Cross Good Samaritan Award

June 17, 2013

On February 21, 2013, as heavy traffic and heavier snow made the roads in Boone County treacherous at best, Brandon Irwin of Boone County Public Works put his own life on the line to help save someone else's. Followed by an ambulance desperately trying to transport a heart attack victim to University Hospital, Brandon plowed through 2 ½ miles of snow to complete a dangerous journey that would be marked with a life saved.

Now, as the sun blazes and snow is but a memory, Brandon is being recognized for his bravery with the Heart of Missouri Red Cross's Lifesaver Award in Good Samaritan category. According to the chapter's website, this award is presented to “an individual over the age of 18 who has made a difference in the life of a person(s) or their community through their compassionate and thoughtful actions.” The Heart of Missouri Red Cross accepts nominations for Lifesaver Awards in 13 different categories from all 21 counties that it serves.

Brandon will be recognized at a ceremony on June 25, 2013 from 4:00PM-7:00PM at the North Jefferson City Pavilion. The event, which is open to the public, will include a barbecue, a live and silent auction and activities for children such as a bounce house and a juggler/magician. Tickets for the event are available for $15 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under, proceeds from which will be used in the chapter's disaster relief efforts. Tickets can be purchased at the Jefferson City office (431 E. McCarty Street), the Columbia office (1805 W. Worley Street) or by calling the chapter's toll-free number, 866-815-2738.
