Things you may have missed...

US Census Kick-Off

On Tuesday, the US Census Bureau held a press event to tell the public about the 2010 census. Boone County Presiding Commissioner Ken Pearson was a speaker along with City of Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman, US Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, Executive Director of Boone County Community Partnership W. Lolita Lucas, Regional Director of the US Census Bureau Dennis Johnson and Director of Organizational Development for MU Extension Dr. Julie Middleton.

Key Dates

  • March 2010: Census forms are mailed or delivered to households.
  • April 1, 2010: National Census Day. Use this day as a point of reference for sending your completed forms back in the mail.
  • April - July 2010: Census takers visit households that did not return a form by mail.

Property Declaration

The County Assessor's office has recently mailed personal property and business property tax declarations. Personal property is assessed each year. The taxpayer is required to update all information concerning the make, model and year of autos, and purchase price and year of purchase for machinery, office equipment, etc. with the County Assessor at the start of each new year. The deadline to file without penalty is February 28, 2010. ยง137.080 RSMo

Bid Opening

On Thursday, the Commission opened bids for wastewater improvement for the Brown Station Sewer Neighborhood Improvement District (NID). The bids will be reviewed by the County Purchasing Department, and the contract will be awarded at a future Commission meeting.

Government Building Among Warming Centers

Due to the extreme cold this week, the Roger B. Wilson Government Center became an official warming center. The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services coordinates a network of warming centers in the community. The designated centers are available to the general public during the building's normal business hours. The warming center locations at the Government Center are just inside the west entrance of the building and outside of the Commission Chambers.

Editorial on Sapp Building Covered Arena

An editorial, by Northern Commissioner Skip Elkin, on the economic impact of the Boone County Fairgrounds will be in the Saturday, Jan. 9 issue of the Columbia Business Times.

Planning and Building Annual Report

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Planning and Building Inspection Department will present its annual report to the Boone County Commission at the 9:30 a.m. commission meeting in the Roger B. Wilson Government Center, Commission Chambers, 801 E. Walnut, Columbia.

Stormwater Ordinance

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Boone County Commission will do a first reading of the proposed stormwater ordinance at the 9:30 a.m. commission meeting in the Roger B. Wilson Government Center, 801 E.
