Boone County Offers Options for Proper Flag Disposal

February 21, 2017

Beginning Friday, February 17, 2017, receptacles for citizens to deposit American flags that are worn, tattered, ripped or soiled beyond repair are available in the lobbies of the Boone County Government Center and the Columbia Public Library. These are in addition to the flag receptacle already available at the VFW, Post 280, Boone County at 1509 Ashley Street in Columbia. VFW, Post 280, Boone County will collect the flags every two weeks beginning March 3, 2017, and will retire them with the proper requirements for retirement of the US Colors in accordance with established protocol. As a matter of respect, citizens are asked to fold the flags prior to placing them in the receptacle; they should not be tossed in or “wadded up.”

Boone County is one of many counties across the nation supporting flag etiquette by taking part in this campaign, developed through a partnership between the National Association of Counties (NACo), the National Flag Foundation and the National Sheriffs' Association. This program is provided free to NACo members through the sponsorship of Nationwide Retirement Solutions and Lamar Advertising. As a NACo member, Boone County is able to participate in this free program and offer its citizens a convenient option for respectful disposal of American flags no longer in a condition to serve as a symbol of our country.
