County Gets Legislative Update at Annual Breakfast
On Monday, the Boone County Commission hosted a breakfast for state legislators to get an update on what is happening in Jefferson City this session. The group discussed topics, such as funding for summer school, economic development, prisoner per diem, smoking cessation and health care. The General Assembly 2010 legislative session ends May 30.
County Expresses Concerns for TMDL document
On Tuesday, representatives from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) met with local government leaders, community officials and concerned citizens for a public meeting on the draft Hinkson Creek Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) document. In an email sent to the City, County and University of Missouri following the meeting, DNR stated that it would reorganize the implementation language, so that the TMDL would be phased in over several permit cycles. However, many of the conclusions and requirements in the TMDL are still unclear. Therefore, Boone County prepared a comment letter that outlines some of the problems found in the draft Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for Hinkson Creek. Those comments were sent on Thursday, April 22.

County Government Breakfast
The Boone County Commission will serve breakfast to County staff April 26 to 29 in celebration of National County Government Week. Breakfast will be served at the Roger B. Wilson Government Center, Boone County Courthouse, the Sheriff's Department and Public Works.
Sheriff's Department Deputy to Receive Honor
Boone County Sheriff Dwayne Carey will present the department's Life Saving Award April 27 at 10 a.m. to Deputy Joey Lahman for action he took to prevent members of a Sturgeon area family from drowning after their pickup truck slid off an icy Route V and overturned in a flooded farm field. The Boone County Commission will present Lahman with a proclamation at the event. PSA Contest Announcement
The winners of the Help the Hinkson Restoration Project's public service announcement (PSA) competition will be revealed Thursday April 29, 2010 at 6 p.m. in the Boone County Commission Chambers, 801 E. Walnut, Columbia, Mo. 65201.
The first place winners in each category will receive $500.00, while second place winners in each category will receive $250.00. Additionally, the videos will be aired on television, at local movie theaters and on educational Web sites. They will also be shown in kiosks during educational events.
In January, Boone County residents and students were invited to create public service announcements to educate the public on stormwater and water pollution issues. There were two contest categories offered. The first, a 30 second or less PSA, received four entries. The second, a one to three minute short film PSA, received three entries.
