Boone County Commissioner Participates in National Conference

This week, Boone County Southern Commissioner Karen M. Miller participated in The National Association of Counties' (NACO) 2010 Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the conference was to ensure that the voice of the nation’s counties is heard by Congress and the administration. The conference, held March 6 to 10, featured remarks from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Obama cabinet secretaries Kathleen Sibelius and Tom Vilsak. Jobs, economic recovery and Restoring the Partnership were the main themes of the conference for more than 2,000 elected and appointed county officials from around the country.

New Treasurer Takes Office

On Friday, the new Boone County Treasurer, Jan Fugit, was sworn into office by Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren. On March 8, Fugit was selected by Gov. Jay Nixon to replace former Boone County Treasurer Kay Murray who retired Feb. 28 after serving in the position since 1976. Fugit will be on the August Democratic primary ballot.

Boone County Receives Energy Grant

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources awarded a $219,177.00 grant to Boone County Government through the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's (ARRA) Energize Missouri Communities program. The grant will be used for energy efficient retrofits, such as lights, boilers, and heating, ventilating and cooling systems (HVAC) in public buildings on the Boone County Government downtown campus and at the Boone County Jail facility. The County expects to see a payback on all energy retrofits within 10 years. Boone County's application was one of 86 applications competing for $18 million in ARRA energy grant funds allocated to Missouri cities and counties.

City/County Meeting

The Boone County Commissioners will meet with City of Columbia Manager Bill Watkins Friday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the Daniel Boone Building, 701 E. Broadway, Columbia. The meeting agenda will be provided by the City.

Candidate Filing Deadline

Filing for the August 3, 2010 primary will end March 30 at 5 p.m. in the office of Wendy S. Noren, County Clerk, Boone County, in the Boone County Government Center, 801 E. Walnut St. Room 236, Columbia. For more information go to https://www.showmeboone.com/clerk/.
