Boone County Adopts New Emergency Notification System

September 14, 2016

Come October 1st, Nixle will no longer be used by Joint Communications and Office of Emergency Management to send notifications to citizens.

Beginning October 1st, 2016, Joint Communications and the Office of Emergency Management will use the new RAVE Alert notification system instead of Nixle. Citizens will need to register their communication choices (phone and/or email) and select their notification preferences in order to receive alerts.

The first step to register for alerts is to create a RAVE Smart911 profile. A link can be found on the Boone County Joint Communications or Office of Emergency Management's webpage at ShowMeBoone.org. Citizens who already have a Smart911 profile need only log in at www.Smart911.com and click on "Preferences" to see a list of emergency alerts they can select ("Opt In").

Notifications can be received by phone and/or email. There are four types of alerts one can opt to receive:

  • Emergency Notifications- Urgent, must-know information that may require action such as taking shelter. Includes alerts for National Weather Service Warnings.
  • Advisories- Need-to-know information but not immediately time-sensitive (missing person, amber alert).
  • National Weather Service Advisories and Watches.
  • Traffic Alerts- Traffic situations affecting the flow of traffic and creating an immediate hazard on major thoroughfares, or shared at the request of Fire/EMS/Law personnel on-scene (I-70 and Hwy 63).

There is no cost to receive notifications via RAVE. Bear in mind, citizens need to exercise good judgement in emergency situations. For example, during severe weather a RAVE alert is not a substitute for paying attention to outdoor conditions and tuning in to local media for updates.

By signing up for Alerts powered by Smart911, citizens take a large step toward improving their personal safety at home, work, and on the road.
