Things you may have missed...

County Treasurer Resigns, Interim Replacement Named

On Monday, Boone County Treasurer Kay Murray announced that she will step down from the position she has held for 33 years on February 28. The Boone County Commission named Lisa Roland, Deputy Treasurer/accountant, as the Interim County Treasurer during the Tuesday morning Commission meeting. Roland has worked in the County Treasurer's office since August 2003. Gov. Jay Nixon will appoint someone from among nominees recommended by the Boone County Central Democratic and Republican Committees to fill the post for the remainder of 2010. The candidate elected by voters in November will take office January 1 and serve the final two years of Murray’s term.

Commission Hears Ideas for Youth Basketball Program

On Wednesday evening, the Boone County Commission held a special meeting for the Columbia Youth Basketball Association (CYBA). The organization presented a proposal for building a multi-use recreation facility at the Boone County Fairgrounds. The meeting also kicked off CYBA's $1.5 million capital fundraising campaign.

Tree Trimming Policy in the Works

On Tuesday, the Boone County Commission discussed the development of a residential tree and vegetation maintenance policy. Road and Bridge Maintenance Manager Chip Estabrooks presented a draft policy that outlines the Public Works Department's maintenance guidelines in the County's right-of-way. Chad Herwald from the City of Columbia Parks Department will conduct a tree and vegetation maintenance training session for Public Works staff February 16.

County Intern Earns Full-Time Position at Construction Company

Kerry Mosely, an intern at the Boone County Public Works Department, has been hired full-time at Columbia-based construction firm APAC. Mosely will start at APAC in March as part of a bridge crew in Warsaw, Mo. A graduate of the Job Point Heavy Highway Construction Program, Mosely was selected for a paid 90-day internship with the County in December.

February is American Heart Month

Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation's No. 1 killer. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February "American Heart Month." To check your heart risk go to www.heart.org/missouriproject.

File Your Personal & Business Property Declarations

The County Assessor's office has recently mailed personal property and business property tax declarations. Personal property is assessed each year. The taxpayer is required to update all information concerning the make, model and year of autos, and purchase price and year of purchase for machinery, office equipment, etc. with the County Assessor at the start of each new year. The deadline to file without penalty is February 28, 2010. ยง137.080 RSMo

Coming Up...

Government Center Closings

The Roger B. Wilson Government Center will be closed Friday, Feb. 12 in observation of Lincoln's Birthday and Monday, Feb.15, in observation of President's Day. The building will reopen Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Boone County Northern Commissioner Skip Elkin will be on KFRU's Morning Meeting program February 17 at 9 a.m. Elkin will discuss the latest County news and take questions from callers.

Stormspotter Training

The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) will host a Weather Spotting Training class February 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Columbia Police Department Training Facility, 5001 Meyer Industrial Drive, Columbia.
