If you think your career future includes law enforcement, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department Explorer Program may be for you. The Explorer program is part of Boy Scouts of America organized under Learning for Life's career education program. Explorer Post 2121 membership is open to young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 (you must have completed 8th grade). The program is provided so young adults have the opportunity to experience law enforcement first hand as well as develop leadership and citizenship skills. The Explorer program is a year round activity which meets twice a month from 1.5 to 2 hours during evening hours. All 1st year explorers will attend a 40 hour Basic academy to learn the basics of law enforcement and the operation of the Boone County Sheriff's Department. Activities with in the program will range from a ride along program with officers to a multitude of training from officers that include but not limited to the history of law enforcement, traffic law, radio procedure, firearms training, tactical training, crime prevention and patrol procedures. The explorers will also assist at community events such as the Boone County Fair, Hartsburg Pumpkin-Fest, Memorial Day Air Show to name a fue.
